I work as both a producer and mixer, either separately or across an entire project.
Sometimes I’m involved right from the beginning helping shape a record, and sometimes I’m brought in to mix once something has already been recorded.
Both approaches work. It just depends on what’s required for the project.
Production
Production usually means working closely with artists to develop songs and find the strongest way to present them on record. That can begin with early demos and shaping ideas, or it means taking a finished song and helping it reach its full potential in the studio. The process is always collaborative and guided by what the artist is trying to achieve.
This can include
• Shaping arrangements
• Refining performances
• Exploring sound and character
• Recording in a way that captures artist identity
The aim is always to make records that feel genuine and distinctive rather than chasing trends. Every record should sound like the artist who made it.
Mixing
Mixing is about bringing everything together so the music feels clear, balanced and emotionally right. By the time a song reaches the mix stage there’s usually already a strong idea of what the record wants to be. My job is to take the raw material and shape it so the energy, character and intention of the performance comes through clearly.
Sometimes that means careful, detailed work. Other times it means pushing things harder so the record has the weight and impact it needs.
My approach is fairly simple
• Keep the performance at the centre of the record
• Focus on clarity, space and impact
• Testing the mix across different listening systems
• Know when the record feels right and leave it there
Every record is different. Some mixes need a light touch, others need a bit more attitude. It always depends on what the music calls for.
